View Full Version : Smurfe's Diet Has Began!
OK, we started the diet today. Was gonna yesterday but hey, we had a lot of good stuff in the fridge we didn't wanna throw away so I carb loaded yesterday and drank I don't know how many Latte's with eggnog.
So anyway, today we started, I am having worse withdrawals from caffeine than I did from cigarettes. I am trying to lay off the caffeine because it effects the insulin levels and the glycemic index. I had success the last time I dieted with caffeine but I didn't take it in near at the levels I do now. I believe that caffeine has replaced nicotine in my system.
Anyway, just thought I would start a thread to vent on as I go down this path. I am gonna need support at times. If you to are starting this venture, feel free to jump on board here and be my diet buddy.

Steve...good luck in this next adventure....you'll beat the caffeine just like you did the smokes..!!! :jig: :jig:
The problem with all this is that I wanted to give up smokes, I don't want to give up coffee.:bang: I love coffee, I cherish coffee, I need coffee.:soapbox: I am only cutting back to aid in weight loss in the beginning. Hopefully my metabolism will kick back in and then I can go back to espresso shots:wow:

Good luck Brother!
I am not on a diet per say, but what I am doing has worked pretty well. I just eat what I want, when I first want it that way the craving is curbed and I don't over eat. I have to say it works, since I had Noah I have lost 65 lbs (I only gained a total of 15lbs during the pregnancy so in reality I lost 50lbs).
I could never give up my caffiene! I am addicted! I gave up alot of sugar, and I can't have chocolate (anaphlyaxis) so that is all I have left!

Hey Smurfe, the city physician, who does all our department physicals, is recommending a diet called the Paleo diet. It is suposed to help with weight loss and lower cholesterol. Haven't tried it or researched it myself, but he swears by it. Might be something worth looking into, just a thought.
The essentials of the Paleolithic Diet are:
Eat none of the following:
· Grains- including bread, pasta, noodles
· Beans- including string beans, kidney beans, lentils, peanuts, snow-peas and peas
· Potatoes
· Dairy products
· Sugar
· Salt
Eat the following:
· Meat, chicken and fish
· Eggs
· Fruit
· Vegetables (especially root vegetables, but definitely not including potatoes or sweet potatoes)
· Nuts, eg. walnuts, brazil nuts, macadamia, almond. Do not eat peanuts (a bean) or cashews (a family of their own)
· Berries- strawberries, blueberries, raspberries etc.
Try to increase your intake of:
· Root vegetables- carrots, turnips, parsnips, rutabagas, Swedes
· Organ meats- liver and kidneys (I accept that many people find these unpalatable and won’t eat them)

Smurfe good luck!
I have another weigh in with my trainer tomorrow. My news years resolution is to actually pay him for more sessions. I really didn't like the diet he had me on though, there was no room in it to vary, it was the same thing everyday. I kinda got tired of whole wheat bagels, turkey sandwiches and linguine with marinara sauce.
I have a doctors appointment about my foot before the gym tomorrow so hopefully we can figure out what is going on there. It sucks when you are taking the ibuprofen BEFORE you even work out.

LOL, when I read about that Paleo diet, I missed the part where you went from "don't eat" to "eat these." I was thinking, WTF kind of diet is it when you can't eat grains, dairy, meat, or vegetables?
- Greg
Greg, when I first read it I thought the same thing...I thought what would you eat. I was going to highlite the don't eat...and eat. Sorry bout that!
Shelby
That Paleolithic Diet is basically the same as the Atkins of South Beach Diet. No carbs or no sugars.

Remember that the body needs carbs!!!!!!
Starving the body is not good. Eat nutritionally, balanced, and in MODERATION. Increase physical activity and you will be losing the weight.
No soda. Reduced juice. Skim milk (take a look at the difference between skim vs. 1% vs. 2% vs. Whome milk some time in calories and fat.)
When you eat out, share the meal with your spouse (waiters hate my wife and me when we dine since we split a meal) or ask for half of it to be taken home right away.
Eat WHOLE GRAIN breads, no enriched anything. Higher fiber is good. Eat a pouch of oatmeal too - lowers cholesterol, helps with glycemic control, and gives you more fiber.
Reduce the salt. Anything processed has a ton of it.

Yeah, you are right, I feel dog tired after 3 days on this diet and it has to be from low carbs. I am not doing NO carbs but am going to re-evaluate here as I feel blah. Just have to learn the good carbs from the bad carbs.
I notice you say eat a pouch of oatmeal. I was always told to stay away from the instant oatmeals cause they were full of sugars as well as had a ton of salt in them, even the regular and to always eat long cook oatmeal. Any truth to this or am I off base? I like the instant oatmeals but don't care for long cook, it is too gummy.

You have to make trade offs. There is more sugar in the pouches, but it is more quickly made. So you balance out the amount of sodium and sugars.
The fiber and wee bit of protein in it are beneficial though. You just have to figure out what you want more. It is a tough line to walk. I eat mine later in the evening so I do not eat later.
It also gives the fiber 8 hours to work. :barf:

Oatmeal:v: .............I think I'll stick to the Capt. Crunch!
I actually like oatmeal, the instant kind, never cared for the long cook kind. I was always told though to stay away from the instant kind, it had no nutritional value and was like eating Capt Crunch, dunno, the ones I would eat were fairly sweet so I always took it to heart.

That brings up another point. Captain Crunch has hydrogenated oils in it. These are also known as trans-fats. Nasty crap I tell you. Get rid of it from the diet - it is in everything, but more people are coming out with stuff without it.
Basically it sticks around and causes elevated cholesterols (if I recall) and there IS NO SAFE AMOUNT TO INGEST.
Instant Oatmeal has nutritional value, but not as much as regular oatmeal.
Oh, eat natural peanut butter too. Good for long-term carbs and protein. Less salt, less fat, no hydrogenation. Tastes pretty darn good too.

I know very few people who eat their oatmeal truely plain. Most add something like brownsugar, honey or syrup to it anyway. So when it is all said and down does teh flavored packaed kinds really have that much more suger?

You are correct, but if you follow the letter of the law you eat the stuff long cooked and plain :v:

Natural peanut butter is really good! I love it! It has a better taste than JIF or anything else I have tried!
Now oatmeal on the other hand...I can't stand the stuff. I too will stick to my capn' crunch!
Shelby
now you all are just making me homesick.

Vorick, are you asking us to ship you some oatmeal? I think I could probably do that if it would make you happy. (shakes head and wonders why Vorick doesn't ask for something better than oatmeal) lol
Thanks Bud, for watching out for the rest of us, Bless you.

We could send you some natural peanut butter, but I don't think you have too many refrgierators over there - I could be wrong.
Let us know what you need and maybe we can ship ya a package.

Ship a block of cheddar cheese and some salsa, once it gets there... bam! Instant nacho sauce!
And whatever happened to those 150+ degree tolerant chocolate bars that they developed for Gulf War 1/Desert Shield/Desert Storm? I gotta get me some of thems for my armageddon shelter.

Surprisingly, not as easy as quitting smoking. I ditched the South Beach Diet and am now just watching calories, fat and processed sugars as well as trying to increase physical activity but the wife keeps telling me she is tired.
