I was wondering what are you all using for a chemical restraint. Inapsine is being used in some areas around the NW, but many MD's are very skittish when it comes to it's use because of the mis-applied "black-box" warning. I've used it many times and love it. My location only has Versed listed as a chemical restraint, and we've been running into some calls where this just don't cut it.
What are you using? doses? indications? etc...

I always used Versed but it was easier getting teeth pulled than to get an order for it.:bang: Dose was like 0.02 mg/kg if I remember right. Seems though I normally just gave the entire 10 mg IM. This protocol wasn't etched in my brain as like I said, it was rarely used and I just said hell with asking for it. I normally just had a Cop use their Tazer and called it a day.:smiley_ab

We use versed as part of the RSI procedure. We also carry valium. On a side note, haldol is the same thing as haloperidol.

We do not have a protocol for this but as a rule if we call Med control they will give us orders for Valium. We only carry Valium, Morphine and Demerol. With our new medical director and training officer I forsee the demerol coming off the truck, RSI in our future and possibly ativan added to our arsenal. :smiley_ab

If you ever have to give somebody Thorazine, pack a lunch- you'll be there for a while.

Before I worked in EMS I was a mental health tech. Thorazine, Vitamin H (haldol) and Inderal were our friends. :smiley_ab Of course they were not given in an emergent dose but a daily maintenence dose. GAWD help you if your clients refused to take their meds over several days. :bang: All I learned was "duck" and hope that you didn't get beamed with some UFO. :D

Valium/Versed. Can use it when we feel it is appropriate, we don't need an order for it but a lot of the guys call in for it anyway just to cover their butts.

We can give valium but try not to because usually the people that need it are the junkies anyways dont want to benefit them rather just sandwich them with backboards.
