How does everyone's dept. handle debriefings?

If you use CISD, do you use an outside agency or is someone within your dept. certified to handle debriefings?

Are there any other acceptable forms of stress management after an incident that is used by EMS or fire?

Thanks!
Trish

Trish,

We use an outside individual, he does CISD for most departments in region, is a preacher, and is very well known, and very popular. He was sent from here to 9/11.

We have a little get together shortly after the incident because the Iowa CISD will not come unless it has been 24-72 hours after the incident. So we have a little group session and then we use our area's CISD team if we still need them.

Stress management techniques are unique and individual. You can't specify certain things to do after an incident. Just make sure they have someone to talk to.

We alway talk about each call afterwards, but if CISD is needed, the state has regional members that can respond to the area in a matter of hours. So its kind of outside but yet within the 'group'!

So does anyone know of any resources or where an individual can learn more about CISD? I am not having any luck here at my service.... "We don't need that crap...what the heck ya wanna talk about for?" says my boss. :( This is the kind of wall that I run in to for many things but especially CISD.

Thanks for all the input!

The one major hospital we service provides counselors for any needed debriefings. Our EMS officer encourages us to talk to each other too if we need to. We usually talk about our calls each month during our monthly meeting. I think your boss definitely has the wrong attitude, sounds like he could have used a few debriefings in his time. Don't let him stop you from getting the info you need. Check with the hospitals you work with. In my county we have an EMS Outreach Service that cooridinates all the services available for the local agencies including CISD, classes, etc.

aaaahh yes try the hospitals that I work with... I am on a hospital based service...

I am lucky to have a very good friend in a FF/1st Resp. that is also my parish priest. I just think that he may not always be around and he should not be the only resource. (he told me that if they ever give him a few months off he wants to take the EMT class) :D

I would like to try to get a few of us that are interested at my service in becoming a CISD group or least get a little training.

Thanks to all of you for the input and help!

We have a county CISD team. If needed they will send someone to talk to the rescuers involved in the incident.

We have several members of our department that are part of the state CISD program. If we want it we ask one of them or any of our officers. I have been to 3-4 of them. The last couple of debriefings we have done on our own at a local establishment, no details, just use your imagination as to where a group of guys can go.

We have a county-wide CISD team, and I have to say I've been very impressed with their services. We've used them twice in the last year ofr our own department, and I know many other county departments have used them as well.

I know the old school is "just deal with it" - but that really means that your spouse and kids have to try and deal with you. Also, in volunteer/paid-on-call areas like ours, we have a hard enough time getting people, especially for daytime coverage, that we can't afford to lose them to incident stress when it's not necessary.

A couple weeks ago we had two separate MVC's 30 minutes apart that claimed the lives of 5 kids all under 20. Both crashes were in rural areas that don't have many K's. The CISD team was called for both.

OUR CISD CONSISTS OF SAYING TO THE PEERS "BUCK UP, WHAT DID YOU EXPECT TO SEE DOING THIS JOB?"

ON A SERIOUS NOTE MANY OF OUR EMPLOYEES ARE PART OF THE REGIONAL CISD TEAM AND SOME OF US WERE SENT TO SHANKSVILLE ON 9-11-2001 TO DO DEBRIEFINGS.

Trish,
Have you looked for training or info on the state level? Around here the state offers CISD training occassionally and we have a few people in neighboring counties that will come and talk to our people. Had to use them a couple of months ago when a trooper and his little boy were killed but his wife survived. It wasn't till after the extricated the trooper that they found the child pinned under the seat. It worked well tlking to others about this incident. Just a suggestion. Your boss is wrong and they CISD can be benificial at times.
