View Full Version : regular exercise
How does anyone get any regular exercise in working in this field? Working a normal 8 hour job I exercised 3-5 times a week. Now with working these 12-24 hour shifts I am lucky to get to the gym twice a week.
In this line of work being physicly fit is a huge advantage so I would like to keep a certain level of fitness if possible.

Hey, I am in shape. Round is a shape. :)
It depends on life's commitments, time, and what else you are doing.
So many in EMS have to work a couple of jobs to make ends meet that fitness falls to the wayside.
It all depends on life, and when you work 12 or 24 hours, it depends on how busy that shift was as to how much motivation you are going to have to workout.

I always do regular exercises. Lift weights, run, bike. I don't do them often, but when I do, they're regular. None of that exotic yoga stuff or anything.

I work 3 - 24 hour shifts, I run 3 miles 3 days a week. I do this on 3 of the days I have off. My wife and I also ride bike/walk at least once a day when I am off, often times its twice a day when I am off. You can do it, its a matter of how committed you are to doing it!
I also just bought an eliptical trainer for my basement, so I can continue to run during the winter - in North Dakota its hard to run 3 miles when its 40 below zero with 22 inches of snow.

I've seen your pictures, Nate, and I have to tell you, you've got a bit of pudge to you. So, I'll just draw my own conclusions about how things are going with the lady-friend, eh. :D :D :D

Hager,
You'll have to keep us appraised of how long it takes for that eliptical to become nothing more than an expensive coat rack. ;)
You all need to go easy on Nate or wlse he'll start crying like he did in the other thread. He is young with a fragile little ego. :( :( :( :(

My wife played college basketball and she blew out her ACL. She cannot run very well on pavement without constant pain in her knees. She used the one at the school every day for the past 3 years. I think ours will get plenty of use, but I will keep you informed if it ever turns into a coat rack.

I think someone in another thread said that if you got your feelings hurt easily then this career wasn't for you. I think the same can be said for this forum. :hehe:

What can I say, Bud Light > Me.
Since she moved to College Station to go to school, I only see her on the weekends when she comes down. (Which is every weekend.) I gained a lot of weight when I left Bay Star Pasadena and went to Bay Star Baytown. I went from 15-20 calls a 24 hour shift to 3 calls a week (between the two 24 hour shifts). There was nothing to do, I sat around.
Since I've gotten back on the truck with South Houston EMS, I've already dropped from a 34 to a 32 in the first week.

32? You are just a little fart. I think my right leg is about 30 inches around. ;)

Haha Nate... man... I don't know what to say... Me on the other hand... being in scrubs everyday doesn't help much... I went from 145 to about 160 in like 3 weeks, EEEKKK...! But at least with all the running round I do it's slowly burning off!
5'7" 198 lbs. mostly muscle...when I do gain weight it all goes to my belly, I don't know if that is good or bad. I bulked up after I stopped running and got into the FD. Thats when my upper body caught up to my legs.

None of that exotic yoga stuff or anything.
Hey, hey, hey!!! Yoga isn't always exotic stuff! ;)
It is really only stretching and strength exercise. You would be surprised at how much muscle strength and flexibility you can gain from doing a simple yoga routine only several times a week. It doesn't take alot of time either. 10 minutes worth will do it and you get alot of benefit from that 10 minutes. You don't have to go to the gym either, you can do it at home, you can do it at your station while on duty, etc.
I work a day job sitting on my butt in front of a computer for 8 hours, 5 days a week. It is difficult for me to find time for exercise but I can usually fit yoga in somewhere in the day.
There are a number of different types of yoga. You don't need to do the type where you have to twist yourself into a pretzel and stay that way for 20 minutes. There are easier types of yoga that are simply breathing and stretching. If you find a yoga instructor at a gym, etc. you can ask them to show you a simple stretching and strength routime that would help you with the type of work you do. A certified instructor can work up something for you that will be easy and not take alot of time. Then it is just a matter of applying yourself to doing it at least several times a week. it really does help when you don't have alot of time to exercise. :D

I try to use my bowflex 3-5 times a week. I had gotten out of my routine during my clinical time of medic class but now I am back to lifting almost every day. I need to work on my stretching. I find my hamstrings are tight almost all the time now....must that age thing creeping in and 8 hours a day cramped up in a truck. :v:
