The Anchorage (Alaska) Fire Department has an open enrollment for interested candidates looking for employment as a Firefighter/Paramedic. No previous fire experience or training required, only NREMT-P certification that qualifies for, and/or State of Alaska MICP licensure.
The current testing cycle is about to close (July 15th). There will be hiring for a Fire Academy tentatively scheduled for September of this year.
The Anchorage FD is looking for qualified and highly motivated individuals who wish to work in a progressive 911-based ALS transport fire service providing care throughout the Municipality of Anchorage. AFD paramedics utilize advanced EMS protocols under standing orders, including surgical airways, paralytics, 12-Lead ECG analysis, capnography, pulse oximetry, needle thoracocentesis, while under a progressive medical director and CQI program.
The AFD responds ALS and BLS engine companies and other apparatus, and eight ALS FF/PM - FF/EMT staffed ambulances, from thirteen fire stations serving a growing population of nearly 300,000 residents.
Cross-trained special ops teams include a regional Haz Mat team, TRT (structural collapse, confined space, trench collapse), swiftwater, dive and surface water rescue, backcountry rescue, and high/low angle rope rescue teams. A tactical EMS team for callout responses with the Anchorage PD CIRT is in future plans.
Initial starting pay reflects the beginning of the probationary period and does NOT include the additional 7% incentive pay for being a paramedic. By completion of the probationary period, pay will be approximately $19.95/hour plus an additional 14% incentive pay for being a paramedic.
Associate degree's pay an immediate 4% incentive pay; Bachelor's an 8% incentive pay (for allied degrees such as fire service administration, nursing, paramedic technology, or another degree approved by the fire chief).
Currently a FF/PM with less than six years on the job (after testing at the Fire Fighter 3 rank) can be making $20.92/hr with an additional 21% paramedic incentive pay.
All together, it is possible for FF3/PM3s to have a total additional incentive pay around 34% of their base salary after only five to six years on the job. The current union contract includes steady pay raises of 1-3% for the next several years. None of these figures include overtime pay rates.
