First of all hello,
I am new to the threads, but I have been reading them on and off. Here is my dilemma; I have to teach a micro lecture on Fluid resuscitation for closed head injuries. Im not worried about doing the lecture, I am worried about not giving the pertinent information in a short amount of time. Can some of you list the some things you would go over in 5-10 minutes?
Thanks in advance.

First off, welcome to FOOPS. I have to say that 5-10 minutes are going to be tough to give pertinent information.
I would probably give a quick overview of the A&P of the skull and brain, cover the different type of bleeds and injuries the brain can receive, (Sub-Dural Hematoma, Coup-Contra-coup injuries etc.)
Give a quick overview of fluid resuscitation and the effects it may have to various injuries. If your department has a particular protocol for closed head injuries, I would defiantly cover that.
If you are a student and not affiliate with a department yet, inquire to you local EMS agencies for these protocols.
Like I said, 5-10 minutes will be tough to give all the info, I would hit the high points from protocols

Yeah, what Steve said... also check the internet for information... there are alot of valuable sites out their to help you out... if you have the latest version of the BTLS or PHTLS book, that should get the ball rolling on pertinent points for you and how to condence it into 5 - 10 mins. Good Luck.

What area do you live in? One thing you may want to consider is asking some of your local emergency flight services' training personnel to help you with this. They typically are a good authority in those subjects. I know that one of our local Air Ambulance services actually offers an instructor course in traumatic brain injuries, which I'm sure includes the most current trends in treatments. Just another option, i hope. Good luck!!!

see if the Traumatic Brain Injury guidelines from the Brain Trauma Foundation work for you. www.braintrauma.org
I think it's simple to remember. B/P =/> 90, Sats >90% if resp. <9 intubate.
